Bringing Laboratory Support Closer to Senior Communities
The Illinois Senior Smile Initiative is a community program created by Durable Dental Lab to help nursing home, assisted living and rehabilitation residents access more convenient denture laboratory services.
Powered by Illinois’ first Mobile Dental Lab, the initiative brings professional laboratory capabilities closer to participating communities when on-site support is appropriate. Durable Dental Lab works in coordination with licensed dentists and care teams to help reduce transportation, minimize avoidable delays and create a more convenient experience for residents and caregivers.
Clinical diagnosis, treatment and patient care remain the responsibility of licensed dental professionals. Durable Dental Lab provides laboratory services and does not replace a dentist or dental practice.
Why Convenient Denture Support Matters
Comfortable, properly functioning dentures can affect a person’s ability to eat, speak and participate confidently in daily life. For residents of senior care communities, transportation to outside appointments can be difficult and disruptive. Even a repair, reline or adjustment may involve coordination among the resident, family, facility staff, dentist and laboratory. The initiative is designed to bring laboratory support closer to residents and simplify that process whenever possible.
How It Works
1. Initial conversation: A nursing home, assisted living community, rehabilitation center, dentist or healthcare organization contacts Durable Dental Lab to discuss its residents and current dental-service process.
2. Coordination: When there is a potential fit, Durable Dental Lab coordinates with the facility and the resident’s treating dentist or participating licensed dental professional.
3. Scheduled mobile visit: The Mobile Dental Lab visits the participating location based on the planned cases, required laboratory services, location and scheduling availability.
4. On-site laboratory support: Appropriate laboratory procedures are performed on-site or supported through the mobile unit. Some procedures may be completed during the same visit or same day, depending on the case and clinical coordination.
5. Follow-up: The dentist, facility and laboratory coordinate any additional clinical or laboratory steps needed for the resident.
Laboratory Services That May Be Supported
The exact services and timeline depend on the resident’s clinical needs, the treating dentist’s direction and the technical requirements of each case. Potential laboratory support may include:
- Denture repairs and selected emergency repairs
- Denture relines and adjustments
- Modification of existing removable prosthetics
- Laboratory support for denture fabrication and replacement cases
- On-site laboratory consultation and communication with the treating dentist
- Selected same-day laboratory procedures when clinically appropriate and technically feasible
Important: Not every case can be completed on-site or in one visit. New dentures commonly require multiple clinical and laboratory steps. Timelines must never be promised before the case is evaluated and coordinated with the treating dentist.

Durable Dental Lab’s Mobile Dental Lab is a professionally equipped laboratory on wheels created to bring dental laboratory technology and technicians closer to the point of care. It currently supports dental practices and can also support participating senior care communities through coordinated relationships with licensed dental professionals.
The mobile unit may help reduce shipping delays, improve communication between the dentist and laboratory, and allow selected laboratory procedures to be completed during the same visit. Availability depends on location, scheduling and the requirements of each case.

Does Durable Dental Lab provide dental treatment?

Can every denture service be completed at the facility?
